Every month, SusCom brings thousands of hours of programming into your home. These programs range widely in their content and targeted viewing audiences. Some programs may be objectionable to you or other members of your family, and SusCom is committed to empowering you to determine the types of programs your family sees. Our approach is based on the concepts of choice, control and education.
Choice
Networks like The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Discovery Kids, Toon Disney and Noggin are just a few of the 24-hour channels devoted solely to children. Many others provide an opportunity for your whole family to enjoy watching television together, such as Hallmark Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, HGTV and Food Network. You can be assured that the programs on these channels are of the highest quality - educational, entertaining and safe.
Control
SusCom Digital Cable puts the most advanced content-blocking technology conveniently at your control. You can easily create program blocks by channel, time of day, program/movie rating or title and activate them with a Personal Identification Number ("PIN") code. You'll have complete control over what programs are shown in your home and the peace of mind that comes from PIN security. If you don't have SusCom Digital Cable, you still may be able to block certain programs on program rating alone using V-chip technology. The V-chip recognizes the same encoded TV rating information as SusCom Digital Cable. All television sets with screens larger than 13" sold after January 1, 2000, contain V-chip technology. You'll need to consult your television manufacturer's reference guide for specific details.
Education
One of the best ways to insure your family only sees programs you feel are appropriate for them is to learn more about them yourself. Even content on such family-friendly networks as The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon may not be age-appropriate based on the time of day. Whether or not these programs are "appropriate" for your family is something you should determine. For more information on media literacy, please check out Cable in the Classroom's website at www.ciconline.org or the FCC's website for parents - Parent Place at www.fcc.gov/parents.
